head --lines 8 path/to/file

• Output the first few bytes of a file:

head --bytes 8 path/to/file

• Output everything but the last few lines of a file:

head --lines -8 path/to/file

• Output everything but the last few bytes of a file:

head --bytes -8 path/to/file
