• Output the first few lines of a file:

head --lines count path/to/file

• Output the first few bytes of a file:

head --bytes count path/to/file

• Output everything but the last few lines of a file:

head --lines -count path/to/file

• Output everything but the last few bytes of a file:

head --bytes -count path/to/file
